A few weeks ago a little neighbor boy came to my door
selling food items as a fund raiser for his Cub Scout group. Don and
I both agreed that we should always purchase at least one item from
the little sales people to help build their confidence and social
skills. I had forgotten all about the order until last night when he
came back to deliver the two tins of popcorn we had ordered. He told
me how much I owed him and I proceeded to write him a check.
From the corner of my eye I could see that he was studying
the Christmas tree so I asked him if his family had decorated their
tree yet. "Yep, but ours is much bigger than yours." I had to smile
because it was such a child answer (mines bigger, better, brighter
than yours). Then he reminded me that they didn't have a tree last
year. His mother was due with their third child and was experiencing
some complications. Rather than risk an early delivery they chose
bed rest that limited a lot of the usual Christmas traditions. She
delivered a healthy baby girl a few days before Christmas but the
big event was the Baby not the tree.
As I handed him the check I asked,
"So, what are you getting this year for Christmas?" Without skipping
a beat, he proceeded to tell me what he was giving both his sisters,
mom, and cousin. I honestly expected to hear his personal Christmas
wish list but instead I learned from a very humble child the true
meaning of Christmas. He was more excited about what he was GIVING
than what he was getting.
I think I'll change that question
around next time and ask, "What are you giving this year for
Christmas?"
Happy Giving,Brenda

As I prepare my heart for the Christ child, I can't
help but remember what Jesus gave to me - His life in exchange
for my salvation. It sure makes any gift that I could give seem
insignificant.
Ultimately, it has nothing to do
with the gift that is given but has everything to do with the spirit
of the GIVER.
