My granddaughter goes to a Christian daycare center and it fills me with joy when she tells me about a new story that she’s learned from the Bible. It delights me even more when she puts the Bible and scripture to work. For instance little Morgan was determined not to have a bad day even though no matter what she did, it seemed to be wrong. She spilled her milk at breakfast, turned the TV volume up instead of down, put two different colored socks on, and forgot that she was suppose to give her sister the pacifier if she started to cry while mom was trying to brush her teeth before heading out for the morning.

Mom came in the room and Emily was screaming at the top of her lungs, Morgan was still trying to find the volume on the remote control and hadn’t even attempted to put her shoes on her mismatched feet. Mom was furious! “Morgan! What are you doing? I asked you to watch your sister, I told you to get your socks and shoes on – look you have two different colored socks on, and I am going to be late for work?”

Morgan in her little child like voice, grabbed her mommy’s arm and said, “Mommy, I know you’re mad at me but Jesus loves me anyway.” Morgan ministered to her mommy that day. Mommy stopped, knelt down to Morgan’s eye level and said, “Yes, He does Morgan but He also wants you to put your socks and shoes on so that mommy isn’t late for work.” A hug was exchanged between the two and the events that followed were stress free.

Mommy couldn’t help but smile on her way to work knowing that Jesus had worked through Morgan to say, “Slow down and breathe.” I received a phone call from my daughter that morning to share Morgan’s story. I couldn’t help but smile as I remembered having that same kind of morning with my daughter many years ago.

We have so much to learn from our children and even more to learn from theirs. They are what we used to be but this time we witness those events through experienced eyes. We need to slow down and breathe and Jesus will fill each one of us with a peace that is beyond compare.

Today I’m wearing mismatched socks to celebrate Morgan’s victory. I hope you do too.

“Mommy, I know you’re mad at me but Jesus loves me anyway.”

During this Christmas season take time to pause, reflect, and rejoice!
